Accon 1291: The conquest of the last Christian base in the Holy Land by the Mamluks marks a turning point in the history of the knightly orders. For the "Order of St. John of the Hospital of Jerusalem", a centuries-long phase of exile and reorientation begins. On Cyprus, then on Rhodes and finally on Malta, the Knights of St John found a new home and tried to breathe new life into the old ideals of the Order.
The Knights succeeded in establishing a new reputation in a changed world through a combination of fighting Muslim expansion in the Mediterranean and charitable work. It was not until Napoleon ended their rule in Malta in 1798. The Order's magnificent architectural and artistic heritage in Rhodes Town and Valletta still bears witness to its former importance today.
