Descriptionof Antwerpen/Oostende/Diest. Fortifikatorischer Exkursionsbericht einer Studienreise vom 09. bis 16. April 2016

Manufacturer
The study excursion, conceived as a pilot tour of the European cultural route "Forte Cultura", realised in April 2016 and now documented, leads to important fortifications from the time of the foundation of the Belgian state (1830/1839) up to the World Wars in Antwerp, Oostende and Diest and sheds light on how they are dealt with today.
A volume from the series "Contributions to International Fortification Research". Belgium's chequered fortification history was always determined by the political events of its strong neighbours. With the independence of the state in 1830/39, the borders were also secured accordingly, culminating above all in the construction of the national reduit Antwerp. Until World War I, the city was surrounded by two massive lines of defence and thus developed into one of the leading major fortresses in Europe. During World War 2, Belgium's coastline was again fortified as part of the Atlantic Wall. Significant fortifications have survived from both the 19th and 20th centuries, most of which are maintained and used in an exemplary manner with intensive publication activity.
