Volume 63 of the series "War in History". The study of the German officer corps has so far focussed on Prussia and the period after 1871, whereas studies of the military elites of the small and medium-sized German states during the first half of the 19th century have tended to be the exception. The author now presents a comprehensive basic study of the Bavarian officer corps during the period of the German Confederation. The result is a picture of a socially heterogeneous and less exclusive functional elite. In the contemporary consciousness, the officers remained strongly related to their respective social milieu of origin. Only the army reform after the defeat against Prussia in 1866 led to an increasing harmonisation with Prussian conditions in Bavaria.
