Description
Stonehenge is a pinnacle of prehistoric construction and engineering. But the stone circle does not lie in isolation. It is part of a ritual landscape with thousands of years of history and parallels throughout Europe. A look at Westphalia reveals imposing megalithic tombs, which also characterise the landscape here as the oldest preserved structures. They anticipate the construction method with stones weighing several tons several hundred years before Stonehenge and are still an integral part of the cultural landscape today.
The LWL Museum of Archaeology / Westphalian State Museum in Herne, together with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology (LBI ArchPro), is showing the special exhibition "Stonehenge. Of People and Landscapes". The exhibition catalogue includes contributions by leading international scientists on the development of the cultural landscapes of Stonehenge and Westphalia. For the first time, the latest findings are published and a comprehensive treatise on Stonehenge research is presented in German.
