In this analysis, the author examines the changing role and increasing importance of military superiority and striking power in the air over the period of the past 100 years. To this end, all major conflicts between 1912 and 2012 are examined, not only World War I and World War II or the current conflicts in the Middle East, but also the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, the Falklands War in 1982 or the deployment of Soviet air forces in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. The specific deployment of air forces in smaller conflict hotspots, such as Malaya, Oman, Kenya or Northern Ireland, is also documented.
