Description
The Antwerp goldsmith and armourer Eliseus Libaerts created three of the most magnificent armour sets in the world in the second half of the 16th century. Two of them belong to the collection of the Armoury and can be seen in the newly opened Giant's Hall of the Dresden Residence Palace. King Erik XIV of Sweden commissioned at least two of these sets, which were probably created in connection with the courtship of Queen Elizabeth I of England.
The new publication by Sabine Wilde and Holger Schuckelt is devoted in detail to the history of the armour on display in Dresden, which took an unexpected course as a result of the Triple Crown War between Denmark and Sweden. For the first time, the elaborately crafted decoration of these major works of European plating art is placed in its historical context, presented in detail and interpreted. Volume 1 of the series "Treasures of the Dresden Residence Palace".
