Description
"God grant that we may meet again happily, we have deserved it, we have not merely prayed, we have also acted". In his letters to his brother, Wilhelm von Below gives a first-hand account of the wars of liberation from 1813 to 1815. As a Prussian officer in the Guards Regiment, he fights in the hail of bullets at Großgörschen and Bautzen, suffers through the period of the armistice and witnesses the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. He is wounded in the last battle before Paris, but uses the time of recovery to enjoy the cultural pleasures of the French metropolis.
At first incredulous at having survived the war, the question of advancement and marriage very soon takes centre stage. Wilhelm von Below never styles himself as a hero, but he is a child of his time. His personal fears and hopes become just as clear from the letters as his perception of the war and its effects on the country and its people. The letters are not only an account of the war, but also a travelogue and cultural-historical source. Therein lies the special appeal of this book.
