The Order of St John was founded by Italian merchants at the end of the 11th century. Originally purely charitable, military duties were gradually added after the First Crusade. The knights of the order became excellent warriors, on land and later also at sea. Their development, equipment and everyday life are described in detail in the book with numerous illustrations.
