Using a wealth of new sources from Russian and German archives and eyewitness accounts, this book paints the first coherent picture of the tragic events that unfolded in the final year of the war on the Lusatian Neisse. Previously unpublished war diaries of Wehrmacht units, Waffen-SS and eyewitness accounts, as well as Soviet war diaries, shed light on the deadly struggle between German and Soviet soldiers around the towns of Guben and Forst. For two months, German soldiers, Volkssturm men and Hitler Youth suffered and died in the desperate battle on the Neisse between Guben, Forst and Klein Bademeusel. The author delves into the dramatic events at the Soviet bridgeheads on the Lusatian Neisse from several perspectives.
