Description
Human-built structures with large stones, megaliths, are a common phenomenon in prehistoric cultures worldwide. These structures, which seem strange and exotic in our modern landscape, were mostly built as burial sites or as sanctuaries. The megalithic structures that are widespread in northern Central Europe - which include stone circles, stone rows, stone cists and individual monuments in addition to the large stone graves - date from the period between ca. 4800 and 2500 BC and thus represent the oldest architecture in this region that has survived to the present day.
The best-known structure of this group in the world is Stonehenge in south-west England, which is dealt with in this volume on the basis of the latest research findings. The knowledge of the enormous importance of these megalithic monuments was finally the reason to initiate a Europe-wide "Road of Megalithic Culture" as an official cultural route of the Council of Europe.
