Description
The invasion of Austria, the baptism of fire in the Polish campaign, the securing of the western border and then participation in the Western campaign are stations in the combat calendar of the German Infantry Regiment 55. The Russian campaign led the regiment with Army Group Centre to the gates of Moscow. After the winter battles, which were full of losses and privations, the regiment was transferred with the 17th Infantry Division to Lorient in France from May 1942, where it remained until the end of March 1943. Returning to Russia, the unit, renamed Grenadier Regiment 55 on 15 October 1942, was deployed on the Mius River.
The deployment in the Mius position was followed by the defensive battles between the Mius and the Dnieper, the breakout from the Taganrog Cauldron, the deployment in the Nikopol bridgehead, the defensive battles between the Dnieper and the Bug, the deployment in the Vistula Arc and final battles in Silesia until the surrender on 8 May 1945. Supplementary reports as well as descriptions by members of the divisions and over 400 photographs, maps and documents make this work an important testimony to contemporary history.
