The basis of this divisional history of the 106th Infantry Division is the estate of Captain (ret.) Erich Böttcher. Until he was seriously wounded in the summer of 1943, he was a staff officer in the infantry and later grenadier regiment 241 of this division. In addition to his own records and personal papers, several folders, pictures, magazines, notebooks and documents of the officers' community of the former 106th Infantry Division, which had been founded shortly after the war, were found. They therefore do not cover the entire period of the existence of this large unit of the Wehrmacht, which was formed at the end of November 1940, destroyed at Kishinev in August 1944, and then provisionally formed again in March 1945. However, since there is no publication on the history of the 106th Infantry Division, and Böttcher's documents provide extensive and detailed information on the three most important military operations the division took part in - Vyazma/Smolensk, Moscow and Kursk - the author and publisher have decided to publish them. In order to avoid the character of a pure war diary, the author has added contemporary witness reports and documents. The result is a complete picture of the deployment of the 106th Infantry Division.
