Description
Some 250 "Bismarck Towers" have been erected in Germany, Poland, Russia, Austria, Cameroon and Tanzania, and many more monuments in honour of Bismarck. The "iron chancellor" was already a mythical figure during his lifetime. But who was the person behind the myth? "In August 1846 I saw Herr von Bismarck for the first time" (Schönhausen). Thus begin the notes of the diplomat and close Bismarck confidant Robert von Keudell, which extend to the founding of the German Empire.
As the latter's secretary, he accompanied Bismarck in the Franco-Prussian War. The memoirs of Robert Lucius Freiherr von Ballhausen follow on directly from von Keudell's notes and reach up to Bismarck's fall in 1890. Robert Lucius was a member of parliament, a minister, one of Bismarck's closest friends and was regarded as his mouthpiece. Together, the two books of memoirs, previously only available in Fraktur script, are the most intimate testimonies we have about the founder of the Reich.
