Description
Courtly celebrations served to manifest relations of rulership. It was not without reason that rulers often entrusted their court artists with the direction of festivities. With the help of the available arts and at considerable expense, events were created that were often documented in words and pictures and received with great interest far beyond the circle of participants. This volume is dedicated to the phenomenon from a primarily cultural-historical perspective. Starting with the question of what function festivities fulfilled in the courtly age, it turns its attention to the courts in the Middle Ages. Not for nothing did rulers often entrust their court artists with the direction of festivities.
