Description
Napoleon reordered the German map after his victories over Austria and Prussia. In 1807 he created the Kingdom of Westphalia as a model state within the Confederation of the Rhine. With its internal organisation oriented towards France, the kingdom was to serve as a model for the desired structure of the other member states of the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon's brother Jérôme Bonaparte was appointed king. The kingdom was essentially made up of the territories of the Electorate of Hesse, the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and the Prussian territories on the left bank of the Elbe. In 1810, territories of the former Electorate of Hanover were added.
Since Napoleon regarded the Confederation of the Rhine primarily as a military alliance, the Westphalian army was of great importance. It too was organised entirely along French lines.
The authors describe the structure and deployment of this army. The focus of the book is on the detailed depiction of the colourful uniforms of the individual units. Units that are usually passed over, such as the administration, ambulance, national guard, etc., are also covered. All available sources have been consulted to compile this comprehensive overview.
