This work examines the six major extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Polanda sobering reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust. Nearly 80 years later, the concept and scale of the Nazi program of genocide remain an indelibleindeed, almost unfathomablestain on human history. Yet it was a terrible reality, for whichas this compelling book demonstratesall too much evidence exists. Between 1941 and 1945, an estimated three and a half million Jews, along with an unknown number of other victimsincluding Soviet prisoners of war and Sinti and Romaperished in six camps established in Poland: Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka. Uncomfortable as it may be, it does modern generations no disservice to be reminded of man's inhumanity to manif only to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated. This is precisely the purpose of this book: it traces the history of the so-called "Final Solution," as well as the construction and operation of the "Aktion Reinhard" campsfacilities built solely for the purpose of mass murder and genocide.
