Description
The book deals in detail with the fighting in Hoch- and Hintertaunus around Easter 1945. The core of the German units were the remnants of the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord", which was crushed in the west coming from Finland. A chapter on the prehistory in Finland as well as on the battles in the Vosges, Lampaden near Trier and at the Deutsches Eck was prefaced. Since the unit with the 650 subordinate members of the Weilburg Junkerschule as well as smaller Wehrmacht units finally perished only two and a half days after leaving the Taunus north-east of Büdingen in the Kefenrod/Leisenwald/Waldensberg area, this route is also traced.
The fallen German soldiers were - as far as possible - recorded by name. This is followed by chapters on the occupation of the Vordertaunus and Frankfurt am Main. A separate chapter deals with the anti-aircraft artillery of Flakgruppe Frankfurt; an overview is given of the anti-aircraft artillery in general as well as of the deployment of the anti-aircraft batteries in the Frankfurt area in particular, expanded by accounts of the experiences of anti-aircraft helpers involved as well as of crew members of Allied bombers shot down in the Frankfurt area. The chapter on the air war over the Taunus is quite extensive, covering the area east of today's A 3 motorway, as well as the Gießen area, the Wetterau and Frankfurt. A comprehensive documentation of all aircraft losses in this area during the Second World War that can still be recorded today, supplemented by background information and accounts of the experiences of pilots involved.
