Suburban rail transport in and around Lisbon and Porto.
Few countries in the world offer the urban transport enthusiast such a contrast between transport anachronisms and state-of-the-art rapid transit systems as Portugal. Even though Europe's most westerly country has only one proper metro, the range of urban rail transport fills an entire volume in our series on European rapid transit. In the Lisbon metropolitan area, besides the four metro lines and the world-famous traditional Eléctricos, there are now also modern trams, as well as numerous interesting funiculars and lifts and suburban railways similar to suburban trains. Porto, located at the mouth of the Douro into the Atlantic, offers a historic tram line and a funicular, as well as a modern light rail network with longer underground sections and extensive overland routes. Curiosities such as the water-powered funicular of Braga and the historic Sintra tramway, which mainly operates for bathing tourism, round off the volume.
