Description
Paramilitary maritime transport and construction organisations strengthened Germany's potential during its rearmament, in preparation and in the Second World War. Until now, no reliable records of their ships and boats were available. The authors have analysed numerous sources and for the first time have presented a publication that reflects the inventory of the Speer transport fleet and the Organisation Todt.
In 50 years, Theodor Dorgeist and Günther Meyer, first separated by West and East, identified about 1700 ships and boats from well over 2000 units, from the Toulon passenger steamer to the cutter in Kirkenes. The source situation makes it impossible to compile a complete list. The current national and international registers usually only include ships up to 100 GRT, at best up to 50 GRT. The authors decided to list these many "little ones" in as much detail as the data collected would allow. The highlight of the work is the section with 150 concrete ships by name! Furthermore, the approximately 200 rebuilt Motor Wiking ships are brought with data and curriculum vitae. Despite unavoidable gaps, "Transportflotte Speer" provides a sufficient overview of these paramilitary organisations.
