Description
The first German U-boats entered the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar in September 1941. After their first combat missions against Royal Navy ships supplying the fortress of Tobrouk, the German submarines paused at their first base, the Greek island of Salamis, near Athens. In November 1941, the "grey wolves" sank a battleship and an aircraft carrier - the first "Mediterranean" Knight's Crosses were awarded.
From December, the Italian naval bases of La Spezia and Pola received part of the 20 submarines of the new 29th U-flotilla. During the first ten months of 1942, when German submarines were able to sink numerous Royal Navy warships and Allied supply ships, the balance of power began to shift in favour of the Axis powers. However, the German navy was unable to stop the landing of American troops in North Africa in November 1942. This successful Allied operation marked the turning point in the Battle of the Mediterranean. The installation of additional air defences in the naval port of La Spezia was not enough to effectively combat the increasingly ubiquitous Allied aviation. In May 1943, Toulon became the main base for the U-boats, which experienced their "black month", coinciding with the surrender of the Afrika Korps.
