As a midshipman in the crew of 1906, he underwent military training in the Imperial Navy, rising to the rank of naval officer with front-line service in the Ottoman Empire and as a submarine commander in the First World War. In the Imperial Navy of the Weimar Republic, he managed to continue his military career, eventually reaching the highest rank in the Kriegsmarine, most recently that of commanding admiral of the Norwegian west coast. Schrader's chronological biography traces the career of a naval officer: his training at the naval academy, all his land and sea assignments, and his service in both world wars. The socio-cultural characteristics of Schrader's life are also taken into account and appreciated. The biography is based primarily on von Schrader's previously unpublished estate, naval sources from the Federal Military Archives in Freiburg im Breisgau, the submarine archive in Cuxhaven, and Norwegian archives and contemporary witnesses. Previously unpublished photos and an extensive appendix complete the book.
