Description
The series of "Aviso" trawlers had the misfortune to be developed too late for the start of World War 2, so that some of them were sent into the fire virtually without combat-ready armament. Nevertheless, they served, if not as trawlers (very few), then as escort vessels, a type of ship sorely lacking in the French Navy. Some of these ships were also used in theatres of war such as Dunkirk, Dakar (on both sides, FNFL and Vichy), the Provence landings, Indochina and even Algeria. Each of the ships had an exciting and little-known operational history.
Like their sister ships featured in Volume 1, the adjective-named Aviso stern trawlers featured in this second volume went through an exciting career with many highlights ("La Batailleuse", "La Capricieuse", "La Gracieuse", "La Boudeuse", "L'Impétueuse", "La Curieuse" and the "La Moqueuse"). The four that survived the Second World War took part in the Indochina War and three in the Algerian War. La Capricieuse ended her service in the Pacific and La Moqueuse, the last to enter service, was used as a test ship for the SS-11 missile trials in the 1960s.
