The American Essex-class aircraft carriers were in service from 1943 to 1991, from the second half of the Pacific War to the end of the Cold War. A total of 24 ships were commissioned. Of course, no two ships are absolutely identical, as they were built at different shipyards, detection equipment evolved, modernisations were carried out to varying degrees, repairs were made after damage, anti-aircraft defences were strengthened, and after the Second World War, a series of modernisations were carried out to adapt them to jet aircraft, with a converted island and a sloping runway for fifteen ships. Volume 1 deals with the origin, construction and description of the ships, as well as the history of the first nine, from the Essex to the Bennington. Volume 2 covers the rest and the end of the story, starting with the Boxer and ending with the Philippine Sea, with numerous appendices.
