Description
This richly illustrated book deals with the military flags of Bavaria from the beginnings of the ducal army in the 16th century to the end of the royal army in 1919. The beginnings of the history of flags lie in the lansquenet flags for the short-lived army formations of the 16th century. It was not until the great armies of the Thirty Years' War of 1618-48 that the real history of Bavarian insignia began. The fact that Bavaria played a special role here as the vanguard of the Catholic war party was symbolically expressed by a great variety of religious motifs on the flags. Since the 17th century, the flags have always been characterised by the white and blue house colours and the coat of arms of the Wittelsbach dynasty. In addition, the symbolism of the reigning elector changed with each change of government. Since each change of ruler left its mark on the flags, they always offered a vivid reflection of the political changes of the era.
On the basis of surviving real objects and pictorial representations, the development of flags and standards is traced against the background of the organisation of the army, whose structure determined the decoration with flags. Within the time periods, the insignia are treated separately according to the different branches of arms, with references to their fate in campaigns or their whereabouts. A great deal of space is also devoted to the flag ribbons and war decorations that were awarded in abundance in the 19th century. Finally, separate sections deal with the significance of flags as symbols in the army over the course of time, their religious exaltation through flag dedications, their role in everyday military life and their function as tactical signs in battle. In this broad spectrum, the volume reaches far beyond a mere history of the field insignia of the Bavarian army: it also conveys an impressive picture of three centuries of Bavarian symbolic and national history.
