Description
The striking oeuvre and extraordinary life of H. W. Koekkoek, scion of a famous family of painters, are the subject of this book. The scenes of the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71), contemporary international military types and cavalry and artillery units, as well as the illustrations Koekkoek produced of the wars between 1900 and 1918, are unique in the military genre of his work.
After 1920 he was forced to paint romanticised, peaceful Dutch landscapes and cityscapes. His oeuvre, which became known mainly in England, Australia and North America, is characterised by great imagination and faithful rendering, especially of artillery and cavalry, in which the horse takes centre stage. Koekkoek's return to the Netherlands - between 1900 and 1920 he lived in London, where he was associated with "The Illustrated London News" - led to deep homesickness. The waning interest in his beloved military subject made him melancholy. In despair he wrote to one of his art dealers: "If only there were war again".
