Description
On 29 June 1440, St. Peter's Day, the armies of Florence and Milan led by Michelotto Attendolo, Giampaolo Orsini and Niccolò Piccinino faced each other in the plain below Anghiari (still called the "Piana della Battaglia"). The battle ended in victory for the Florentines. The Battle of Anghiari was crucial not only for the history of Tuscany, but for the entire Italian Renaissance and for European civilisation: when the Duke of Milan abandoned the disputed territories after his defeat, Florence and Cosimo de Medici were able to take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself to seize power and rule over the area and to establish it.
This was considered one of the definitive victories for Florence, consolidating its rule over Tuscany, forever curbing the expansionism of the Visconti towards central Italy, and laying the foundations for the spread of the humanist culture of the Lily City under the protection of the Medici rulers. The fame of the Medici and their city of Florence was to shine throughout Europe, while Milan remained forever confined to its plain, and less than a century later even lost its independence, first to the French and then to the Habsburgs.
