Description
Volume 138 of the series "Guerreros y Batallas" describes in detail the events surrounding the "Miracle of Empel" in 1585. In this battle of the 80-year war between the Netherlands and the Spanish Crown, a starving Spanish army trapped in the Flemish town of Empel managed to achieve a victory over a vastly outnumbered Dutch army that was thought to be impossible. The discovery of a painting of the Virgin Mary and a change in the weather favourable to the Spanish were seen as God's favour to the Spaniards.
This work looks at the political and military background to the battle at Empel, describes the most important people on both sides (Charles of Mansfeld, Philip of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein, Juan del Águila and Francisco Arias de Bobadilla), explains the fighting tactics of the Dutch and Spanish at this time, takes a detailed look at the troops involved in the fighting and finally documents the course of the battle at Empel between 4 and 8 December 1585. It concludes with an assessment of the consequences of the Spanish victory for the further course of the Dutch-Spanish war.
