Description
"Scots wha hae" is the title of the new book by Dr. Johann Baier, whose books deal with the history of the English longbow in the wars of the late Middle Ages. After "The Battle of Agincourt", "Crows over Crécy" and "The Black Prince and the Battle of Poitiers", which describe the successful use of the English longbow on the battlefields of France, he tells here, on the basis of contemporary sources, about the changing course of the Scottish Wars of Independence. For it was in these conflicts that the strategies were developed with which the English archers decades later became the battle-deciding and highly respected weapon whose myth is still alive today.
Dr. Johann Baier, himself a long-time archer with the English longbow, successfully manages the balancing act between exciting narrative and factual information in his books. While narrative passages with their lively descriptions advance the actual plot, commentary and explanatory inserts provide the reader with the necessary historical, cultural and weapons background knowledge. Numerous quotations from the historical sources additionally convey an impression of how the contemporary chroniclers experienced these conflicts. Dr. Johann Baier's books are neither imaginative novels nor dry facts, but the best infotainment in literary form. Anyone who is interested in the events described, who is an archer himself, and who wants to know how the myth of the English longbow came about, will feel as well informed as well entertained when reading this book.
