Description
Königsberg Fortress in East Prussia is one of the few military fortifications that have endured over many centuries. Since the construction of a fortress in the High Middle Ages on the Twangste Hill above the Pregel River in 1257, the later East Prussian capital has remained a fortress which, although it has not had to fend off any sieges in its many centuries of history, has nevertheless been of important military significance due to its considerable defensive power.
It was not until April 1945 that Königsberg had to surrender to the superior strength of the Soviet army during the Second World War. Despite the use of modern weapons, the Russians only succeeded in conquering the city after hard fighting, whose fortifications were, moreover, outdated and only partially preserved. Traugott Ehrhardt's walk through the seven centuries of Königsberg's fortress history offers not only an overview of the changes in the art of fortification from one age to the next, but also of the changes in operational and tactical perceptions regarding the significance of a fortress in the case of defence. Furthermore, this account closes a gap in East Prussian local history research. The author of this work was able to use valuable sources and documents on the history of the Königsberg fortress that were rescued from Königsberg. These include numerous maps and fortification ground plans on the history of the fortifications, which were not accessible to researchers for a long time.
