Description
Whether a powerful free imperial city or a small sovereign town - common to all these settlements, and virtually constitutive of them, was their fortification, the town wall. Thomas Biller's work is the first systematic and at the same time comprehensive overall account of medieval town fortification ever.
In a systematic section, Biller deals with all aspects of medieval town fortification: from the preliminary and early forms to the fully developed fortification of the High Middle Ages to the end and demolition of the town walls in the age of artillery.
He describes all elements of town fortifications: Wall, all forms of guard and gate towers, ditches, land defences, etc. The aspects of financing, construction and maintenance are also important. A second regional section describes all the urban fortifications in the German-speaking world that can still be recorded in terms of construction, from Pomerania and the Order of Prussia to Austria, Switzerland and the remaining parts of the Empire.
