Often synonymous with inconvenience and traffic accidents, sometimes with devastating consequences, their services receive little recognition or even admiration from those who depend on them. Yet the work of these enormous tow trucks and their drivers deserves attention and admiration. The various chapters of this book trace the history of roadside assistance and mechanics since the beginning of the 20th century. They shed light on the vehicles used in this largely unknown profession. Several reports with text and numerous photographs introduce roadside assistance, towing, and recovery companies of all sizes across the country. Readers passionate about the industry, curious newcomers, and lovers of beautiful trucks will find photos of vintage and modern vehicles, both civilian and military, in action whether providing simple roadside assistance or responding to spectacular traffic accidents. The author's snapshots from journalistic assignments and the photographs provided by professional tow truck drivers are largely unpublished. The technological development, regulations, and use of various devices are explained in detail, both technically and practically, and are further supplemented by an introduction to the manufacturers and suppliers. This book should therefore easily find its place in specialist and general bookstores, which currently offer their customers few books on American tow trucks and hardly any publications on heavy-duty tow trucks from our northern European neighbors.
