Description
From the first shots fired at Union-held Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, and General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, the United States of America was irrevocably changed, as were the lives of the soldiers and civilians who survived the American Civil War. This is an extraordinary collection of stories about this epochal conflict, bringing to life with personal intensity the victories and defeats, the value and the suffering.
In this work, some historically significant individuals who lived through this war themselves describe their experiences, impressions, and events from 1861 to 1865. Included are accounts or writings and letters by Abraham Lincoln, Leander Stillwell, Captain Robert E. Lee (a son of the famous Confederate general), Walt Whitman, Abner Doubleday, Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twaine, Stephen Crane, John B. Gordon and Ulysses S. Grant, among others.
