Description
Biography of the Soviet fighter pilot Boris Safonov. He flew on fronts in the far north during both the Finnish-Soviet Winter War of 1939/40 and the German-Soviet War from June 1941. In his slow Polikarpov I-16 fighter, he outperformed the best British "Spitfire" pilots during the Battle of Britain. When Safonov disappeared during a combat mission in 1942, he was the leading fighter pilot on the Allied side. Safonov has remained relatively unknown in Western countries, but here Russian aviation historian Yuri Rybin presents the eventful life story of this successful pilot.
Yuri Rybin, who lives in Murmansk, has spent several decades studying the air war on the northernmost front.
