Mussolini drew on antiquity to legitimise his ideology and portray fascism as the rebirth of the Roman Empire. While he initially identified with Caesar and claimed to emulate his deeds, he later switched to Augustus, who was better suited to legitimising an established ruler. To surpass the Forum Romanum in size, he had the Forum Mussolini built, a sports city that still exists today as the Foro Italico. This book highlights various forms of the reception of antiquity in their function as legitimisation of fascist ideology and propaganda and presents them according to their respective ideological purpose.
