Description
The battle for Budapest, also called "Stalingrad on the Danube", was one of the bloodiest encirclement battles in World War II. Around 165000 people were killed. The Hungarian capital was completely destroyed. In addition to the 800000 civilians, about 70000 Hungarian and German defenders defied a Soviet superiority of 156000 soldiers from November 1944. Until the surrender of the German and Hungarian troops in February 1945, every street and every house was fought for mercilessly. In addition to the key data on the battle, the 8th SS Cavalry Division "Florian Geyer", which was destroyed during the 102-day siege of Budapest, is also reported on. Eight original photographs contribute to the illustration. The novel part of this book is dedicated to the demise of the "Florian Geyer" from the point of view of a Unterscharführer of the Waffen-SS.
