Hitler Youth leader, Knight's Cross bearer, bearer of the Nahkampfspange in Gold. Contemporary History in Pictures.
The publisher presents the public with a unique document, namely the surviving photo album of Helmut Schreiber, Knight's Cross holder and recipient of the Nahkampfspange in Gold, which traces his life from HJ to SS leader of the division "Das Reich", in whose ranks he fought in Russia, on the invasion front and at home. In numerous photographs, we encounter Schreiber as a Jungbannführer next to Hartmann Lauterbacher, as a sentry in front of the Munich Temples of Honour for the Dead of 9 November 1923 and as a freshly decorated SS Hauptsturmführer with the Knight's Cross next to Heinz Harmel and Günther Wisliceny.
The photos provide revealing insights into the training and deployment of the Waffen-SS, showing, among other things, SS recruits during shooting and field exercises, SS juniors in the lecture hall of Bad Tölz, Waffen-SS men in the snow before Moscow as well as in recaptured Kharkov, and many prominent SS generals such as Paul Hausser, Walter Krüger or Sepp Dietrich in previously unknown photographs. The text deals with the history of the HJ and Waffen-SS and traces the life of Helmut Schreiber until May 1945.
