This book recounts the memoirs of a young man whoas the son of a German mother and a Kashubian fathervolunteered for the SS-Heimwehr Danzig in 1939. After being transferred to the SS Division "Totenkopf," he fought in France and Russia. Following a run-in with civilians outside a cinema in Danzig, he was convicted and sent to the SS and Police Penal Camp in Danzig-Matzkau. There, he volunteered for probationary service with the SS Parachute Battalion, with which he served until the end of the war. During this timein 1945he was awarded the Iron Crosses 2nd and 1st Class, as well as two special badges for the single-handed destruction of enemy tanks. His memoirs, which are at times remarkably detailed, offer fascinating insights into this probationary unit of the Waffen-SS. Moreover, his accounts servenot leastas a representative example of the experiences of many young men in the Third Reich.
