This book is based on extensive and meticulous documentation personal diaries, public and private archives, official documents, correspondence and interviews to reconstruct the complex biography of Hermann Göring. From his experiences as a flying ace in the First World War, through the difficult post-war period marked by economic hardship, increasing morphine addiction and his first marriage, to his joining the nascent National Socialist Party alongside Adolf Hitler and participating in the Munich Putsch, to his rapid and spectacular rise in the 1930s. The text analyses in detail Göring's central role in building the National Socialist police state and the Luftwaffe, the looting of works of art, his opulent and contradictory lifestyle, and his later political downfall and military defeat.
