Description
His own camera accompanied the author's father to the barracks at Ohrdruf and Saalfeld, where he did his military service from 1935 to 1937. Dieter Schuster-Wald's parents took their own cameras to war, his mother's to Brussels to the armament command, his father's to the theatres of war in Europe.
The selection in this book is limited to the experiences in the war against the Soviet Union from 1941-1944. The father's stations since the spring of 1941 include occupied Poland ("Generalgouvernement"), the western Ukraine near Dubno, the forests around Bryansk in 1942, the Greater Vitebsk area in 1943/44, the Narwa Front on the Sea of Finland in the spring of 1944, and finally the chaos during the complete collapse of the central section and the panic-stricken flight from Mogilev on the Dnieper to Eydtkuhnen in northern East Prussia in the summer of 1944. His father left behind over 450 photographs of the events on the Eastern Front, and there is room for around 200 in this book.
