Although World War II was more of a war of movement, prolonged and long sieges of forts and cities were neither rare nor unimportant. Examples of long and militarily significant sieges include the battles for Leningrad and Stalingrad. This volume presents six other significant but lesser-known siege operations on the Eastern Front, with the battles for Brest-Litovsk (June 1941), the German defence of the fortress of Cholm (1941/1942), the complex operations to capture Sevastopol (1941/1942), the unsuccessful German defence of Budapest (1945), and the battles for Königsberg and Breslau (1945).
