Description
A volume from the series "Battles - Stages in World History". Gerd Fesser depicts the Battle of Sedan in 1870 and places it knowledgeably in the history of the War of 1870/71 and Franco-German relations. He introduces the armies of both sides, describes the progress of the war, the operations, but also the fight of the French free-armies in the hinterland. The causes of the German victory and the role of Bismarck are also examined.
150 years ago, on 1 September 1870, the decisive battle of the Franco-Prussian War took place at Sedan. It ended a campaign that is considered the last "classic" Napoleonic-style campaign. At the same time, Sedan also marked the birth of Prussian-German arrogance towards the "hereditary enemy". This was to be bitterly avenged in 1914.
