Description
The Great Nordic War (1700-1721) is one of the most significant military conflicts of the 18th century. Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, strove to build a strong Central European empire. But although the Saxon army enjoyed a good reputation as a modern army, it suffered a series of bitter defeats against the ridiculed Swedish army under the young King Charles XII.
This volume analyses the structures of the Saxon army during the war. The usual recruiting conditions and living conditions of an early modern army are described in detail, as are the campaigns and battles in which the Electorate of Saxony's army took part.
Contents:
A young king, an old empire
Alliance policy
Karl XII.-. a ridiculed monarch and a degenerate army?
Tactics and strategy
Uniforms and weapons of the Augustan army 1694-.1705
The Battle of Fraustadt
The Swedish Occupation
Reorganisations
The Cost of a Standing Army

The End of the Land Defension
