Description
The collection of a polymath.
Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), an Italian by descent and a Frenchman by birth, not only left a lasting mark on Austria's fortunes, but also on the art and cultural history of the Habsburg Monarchy. This show focuses on the general above all as a collector and patron of the arts. The exhibition at the Belvedere, Prince Eugene's magnificent summer palace in Vienna, brings together for the first time his art collections and cimelia from the "Bibliotheca Eugeniana", which were dispersed throughout Europe after his death through sale. With 300 exhibits from 60 lenders from 12 countries, this exhibition catalogue shows Prince Eugene as a passionate collector, book lover, patron and builder.
