Description
Parallel to the events of the American War of Independence at the end of the 18th century, the British East India Company (EIC) found itself in a precarious military situation: the disputes with the ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali (and later his son and successor Tipu Sultan) threatened the territorial expansion of the trading company in the East Indies. In particular, difficulties in recruiting further troops made the military situation on the ground more difficult. Accordingly, the EIC turned to the British King George III and requested the dispatch of Electoral Hanoverian soldiers to the East Indies.
As a result, two Electoral Hanoverian regiments entered the service of the EIC for the duration of a scant decade from 1782 to 1791. In the years during which the Electorate of Hanover was in the East Indies, apart from the battle of Cuddalore, no significant fighting took place involving the two regiments. The high losses suffered by the troops of the Electorate during their stay in India, which were caused by the adversities of the climate and the sometimes problematic supply situation on the ground, were out of all proportion to the importance of the Hanoverians in securing the territory of the EIC. Nevertheless, it is precisely this apparent "failure" that makes the operation of the two regiments in India seem appealing for an in-depth historical study. For the everyday military life of the soldiers on the ground was marked by insecurity and threats as well as idleness and lack of occupation: Due to the special nature of the climate and environment in South India, the soldiers and officers in India were confronted with challenges that brought to light economic and social problems that could push the troops to their physical and psychological limits. The author therefore addresses this everyday life on various levels and examines the ways in which the logistical and social challenges were met on the ground. Here, processes of administration and internal communication are dealt with as well as mechanisms of control and disciplining of the soldiers and problems in the everyday life of the soldiers away from military operations.
