Description
The battle of Marengo on 14 June 1800 was only narrowly won by Napoleon Bonaparte. In this famous battle, 28,000 Frenchmen faced 31,000 Austrians under General Melas. After initial successes, the French troops had to retreat about seven kilometres in the course of the day. Melas, believing that victory had already been won, left the rest of the "work" to a subordinate and went to Alessandria himself. This action by Melas enabled Napoleon Bonaparte to concentrate and reorganise his forces for a final counterattack.
