Description
From 16 to 18 October 1813, the largest battle in history up to that time was fought near Leipzig, and the monumental Battle of the Nations Monument was erected to mark the 100th anniversary in 1913. For a long time, the Battle of the Nations was seen as a battle to "liberate Germany" - under Prussian auspices. However, in view of the Europe-wide, even global references of this "Battle of the Nations", highly divergent perspectives and standards of evaluation emerged. Therefore, the military aspects must be expanded to include the political ones. In addition, the question of how to appropriately honour the event was linked to the struggle for the interpretive sovereignty of the following generations. These complex processes of interpretation and reinterpretation of the battle followed the sometimes winding paths of the German national movement. This anthology undertakes to examine the courses, consequences and meanings of the Battle of the Nations and its 200-year aftermath.
