Description
On 22 June 1944, the Soviets begin their major offensive, Operation "Bagration". In the course of this concentric attack, Heeresgruppe Mitte was crushed in a very short time. Hundreds of thousands of German soldiers fall in the desperate defensive and retreating battles, or are overrun by the attacking tank packs and initially take refuge in the forests. In ever-smaller groups they try to make their way west to their own lines. Only a few actually succeed. Many are captured or killed by partisans. Thousands are still missing today. Lieutenant Friedrich-August Schöttge, platoon leader in Field Replacement Battalion 14 at the time, experienced and survived this catastrophe and, with an incredible amount of luck, reached the German front after nine weeks of inhuman strain, permanent fear and almost starvation. Immediately afterwards, still under the impression of what he had experienced, he wrote down this report in the military hospital.
