Description
For a long time, service in the armed forces of the GDR was predominantly a male affair. Women served in the NVA mainly as civilian employees in staffs and administrations. Only a few women served as soldiers. But in 1982, the National Defence Council
of the GDR implemented a change in personnel policy and structure. Now non-commissioned officer and especially officer careers were open to women in many directions. And the female soldiers reflected critically on everyday military life and did not shy away from confronting the military hierarchy. This commitment could have changed the NVA for the better in the long run.
